Permanent Resident Card renewal

For permanent residents of Canada, it is important to carry a valid PR card all the time. Not only the PR card lets the permanent resident to reveal status proof, but it lets a person to freely travel in and out of the country. If a PR card has expired already or within 9 months of expiration, permanent resident can apply for a new PR card.

In a bid to renew a Permanent Resident card, an aspirant need to submit a comprehensive application (paper/online) to the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s case processing centre for PR cards. Once the submission is done and the application is found complete and in order, a new PR Card is issued.

You ought to possibly apply for a PR card if

  • Your card has lapsed or will terminate in under 9 months.
  • Your card is lost, taken, or obliterated.
  • You did not accept your PR card in somewhere around 180 days of moving to Canada.
  • You really want to refresh your PR card to lawfully change your name, change your citizenship, change your orientation assignment, or correct your date of birth.

It must be noted that a Permanent resident status is not going to expire when an individual’s PR card expire.

You can lose your PR status in the following situations.

= An officer points out that you are no longer a Permanent resident after an inquiry (including PR card renewal) or permanent resident travel document appeal

=You voluntarily announce your Permanent resident status

= A removal order is made against you and comes into effect

Even if a person is unable to meet the permanent residency bindings, the PR STATUS remains in effect until and unless an official decision is made on the status.

Loss of PR status

The loss of Permanent residence status is not automatic. It requires a judgement by an officer. If no officer decides that the PR status is lost, then a person is still considered as a permanent resident. This appears especially important for those who bears an expired PR card and wish to enter Canada.
